No luck. Found a few viruses and spyware "programs," but I'm still having wonderful problems with the Windows svchost.exe process consuming 100% of my CPU resources. Also, Firefox keeps opening random webpages. Bugger.
To hell with it -- I'm backing up my documents over the LAN and wiping the hard drive. My poor, immaculate laptop has been defiled; time to make it a born-again virgin. This time, with a nice, healthy Linux partition for me to dwell in while I'm not playing games or developing Windows software.

It sounds lame, but the Microsoft anti-spyware beta strangely works with some hard to remove spyware. Always nice to go etch-a-sketch and wipe your system every so often anyways. Makes you realize how much crap you've downloaded and never use.
True. I'm just irritated because it seems like Windows XP has a much longer mean time between installations than prior versions of Windows did. Everything was going fine, and then I had to go and wreck it. ;)

Think of it as digital spiritual cleansing.
...and if this is the first time you've had an issue with spyware, then you haven't been surfing enough porn.
Ah, Windows. How thee sucks. I just don't have free time to keep that sack of crap running anymore.
Too bad PartitionMagic is no longer independent. That's more bad news.
If you do end up giving Linux a go, you might consider Ubuntu. I've heard good things and the download ISO is only one CD.
I've installed CentOS ("the freshmaker") at the recommendation of my old man. Seems decent so far. No problems getting it set up, but I haven't yet gotten my wireless network card up and running. It's a pain in the ass -- compiling drivers, wondering why compilation of said drivers fails mysteriously, etc. I'll try again later...
Oh, and if you surf porn with Firefox, you're pretty unlikely to get spyware -- it lacks IE's tendency to download and install random crap without any user input whatsoever.
Uhh, if I surfed porn. Which I don't.
Like Ross said, Ubuntu is worth a try. I kinda like the version they did in K. If you can wait a while they will send you disks (lots if you want) for ppc, and x86's. Each cd package has a live disc and install disc. Downloading is faster, but a printed disc feels so nice.
